Namchi, 29th August 2025: To commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the Department of Physical Education, Sikkim Government College, organized a 21.1 km marathon on National Sports Day 2025 under the inspiring theme “Stay Drug Free.”
The event was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. Deepak Tewari, who, in his motivating speech, emphasized the significance of sports in instilling discipline, resilience, and a substance-free lifestyle. He encouraged students to embrace the message of a healthy and drug-free life while becoming role models for society.
The marathon, flagged off from the college playground and culminating at the main gate, wound its way through the local surroundings of the campus. Over a hundred students from B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. streams took part in the run, braving the 21.1 km stretch with enthusiasm and determination. Along the route, hydration and safety checkpoints ensured that the participants were well-supported, while faculty and volunteers from the Department of Physical Education worked tirelessly to coordinate and oversee the smooth conduct of the event.
The race witnessed spirited participation from both male and female students, with moments of sheer grit and camaraderie on display throughout the course. In the boys’ category, Budhi Man Subba from the Department of Limboo emerged as the champion, followed closely by Pranay Chettri of the Department of Commerce and Ranjit Subba of the Department of Nepali, who secured the second and third positions respectively. In the girls’ category, the title was claimed by Urmila Rai of the Department of Physical Education, with Akriti Chettri of the Department of Sociology taking second place, and Lalita Kami, also from the Department of Physical Education, finishing third.
The winners were honoured with medals and certificates during the closing ceremony, presented by the Principal, Vice Principal, and Dean of Students’ Affairs. In addition, every participant was awarded a certificate of participation as recognition of their commitment to the cause and their contribution to spreading the message of a drug-free society.
Beyond the competition, the event stood out as a celebration of fitness, awareness, and unity. It brought together students, faculty, and administration in a shared commitment to promote physical well-being and to strengthen the fight against substance abuse. The Department of Physical Education extended heartfelt gratitude to the college leadership, faculty members, volunteers, and students for making the marathon a resounding success.
