As per the IQAC calendar of Sikkim Government College, Namchi, the Department of Botany conducted a
one-day biodiversity audit on 26 March 2026 for the students of 4th and 6th Semester Botany Honours.
The audit was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Bishnu Kumar Sharma, Mrs. Yeden Bhutia, and Mr.
Chuzing Lepcha. The study was conducted within the college premises, focusing on the area from the main
college gate to the courtyard. The audit involved the identification and documentation of plant diversity,
including trees, shrubs, herbs, and climbers.
The survey resulted in the identification of more than 15 species of trees, 10 shrubs, 20 herbs, and 5
climbers.
A significant number of the recorded plants were of medicinal importance, such as Emblica officinalis,
Rumex nepalensis, Centella asiatica, and Artemisia vulgaris. Ornamental plants like Thuja, Euphorbia
pulcherrima, Araucaria, Callistemon, and Ficus benjamina were also observed.
Additionally, several timber-yielding species were recorded, including Tectona grandis, Cryptomeria japonica,
Schima wallichii, Alnus nepalensis, and Bombax ceiba. The audit also identified edible fruit-bearing plants
such as Elaeocarpus, Emblica officinalis, Caryota urens, Psidium guajava, Punica granatum, Spondias
axillaris, and Syzygium species.
A notable presence of gymnosperms was observed, including Thuja, Cupressus, Pinus, Cryptomeria,
Podocarpus, Agathis, Araucaria, and Juniperus species. Among climbers, species such as Dioscorea,
Stephania, Commelina, Entada, and Ipomoea were recorded.
Overall, the audit highlighted the rich plant biodiversity within the campus and served as an effective handson learning experience providing valuable practical exposure to the students.
