An Awareness Programme on Important Health Issues was held on 24 November 2025 at Sikkim Government College, Namchi, jointly organised by the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, and the college’s Red Ribbon Club (RRC) at the College Auditorium.

The event, inaugurated by Ms. Yangchen Bhutia, Assistant Professor, featured a welcome address by Dr. Yugal Kishore Khanal, Dean, who emphasised the importance of health consciousness among students and appreciated the interdepartmental collaboration. Dr. S. N. Adhikari, Director-cum-CMO, District Hospital Namchi, highlighted the significance of adopting a healthy daily routine, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, sufficient rest, and effective stress management as essential components of overall well-being.

The technical sessions featured four expert-led presentations and lectures.

Dr. Sunita Thapa, DNO, NTCP, presented on Tobacco Control, detailing the harmful effects of tobacco and the importance of prevention and cessation strategies.

Mr. Riwang Bhutia, District Coordinator, DTC, delivered a session on Tuberculosis, discussing symptoms, transmission, treatment options, and government efforts toward TB elimination.

Mrs. Durga Pokhrel, Sr. DPHNO, conducted a session on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), focusing on diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, as well as preventive lifestyle practices.

Mrs. Roshni Thapa, DHEO, concluded the technical segment with a lecture on Reproductive Health, covering adolescent health, menstrual hygiene, early pregnancy, family planning, and available counselling services.

Mementoes were presented to the speakers by Mr. Sonam Wangchuk Lepcha, Nodal Officer, RRC, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Pema Chida Sherpa, Co-Nodal Officer, RRC.

The initiative successfully raised awareness on key health issues, encouraged healthier lifestyle practices, and strengthened collaboration between the Health Department and the college community.
