Namchi, 05 August 2025: Sikkim Government College (SGC), Namchi successfully conducted its Induction Programme 2025 for newly admitted students at the college auditorium today. The ceremony was held in two separate sessions: the first session for Arts stream students commenced at 10:30 AM, followed by the second session for Commerce and Science students at 1:30 PM.
Parents and guardians of the students were mandatorily invited to attend the programme to familiarize themselves with the academic structure, disciplinary framework, and institutional expectations under the guidelines of Sikkim University and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The event was graced by Dr. Deepak Tiwari, Principal of the College, Dr. Dewan Rai, Vice Principal, Dr. Yugal K. Khanal, Dean of Students’ Welfare, along with Heads of Departments and faculty members of all departments.
In his address, Dr. Deepak Tiwari, Principal, emphasized the indispensable role of parents and guardians in shaping the academic and personal development of students. He stressed the importance of continuous parental involvement and monitoring to prevent students from falling prey to negative influences such as drug abuse and other social evils.
Dr. Yugal K. Khanal, Dean, welcomed the students and outlined the discipline and decorum expected on campus. He elaborated on key regulations including the wearing of proper uniform and identity cards, and strictly prohibiting the use of earphones, tobacco, gutka, and unnecessary ornaments on campus. He delivered a firm message against ragging and urged students to report any such incidents either personally or via email to the Dean or Principal. He also provided information on fee structures for non-local students, various scholarship schemes available, and the provision of emergency medical services within the campus.
Dr. Dewan Rai, Vice Principal, spoke on academic guidelines including the 75% minimum attendance requirement, percentage criteria for Honours subjects, and important instructions regarding the registration of online forms under Sikkim University.
A key highlight of the programme was a special awareness session by Shri Ashish Bhujel, Station House Officer (SHO), Namchi Police Station. In his talk, Shri Bhujel addressed pressing concerns among youth such as drug abuse, digital addiction, and cybercrime. He emphasized the dangers of peer pressure and how it often acts as a gateway to substance abuse. He encouraged students to stay vigilant, choose their company wisely, and to report any suspicious or harmful activities to the authorities. Furthermore, he discussed the growing impact of digital overuse and the potential legal consequences of engaging in or becoming victims of cybercrimes, urging students to practice responsible digital behavior.
The Induction Programme concluded on a note of encouragement and caution, with the college administration reiterating its commitment to nurturing a safe, disciplined, and academically enriching environment for all students.
