AISHE

Overview

AISHE stands for the All India Survey on Higher Education. It is an annual, web-based national survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India (Department of Higher Education) to map out and assess the state of higher education in the country.

Launched in 2010–11, the survey collects detailed, real-time data from Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) across India to help the government make informed policy decisions, allocate resources, and chart educational growth.

AISHE requires mandatory data submission from all higher education providers, which it groups into three broad buckets:

  • Universities: Central, State, Private, Deemed universities, and Institutes of National Importance (like IITs/NITs).

  • Colleges: All affiliated or constituent colleges offering degree programmes.

  • Standalone Institutions: Institutions offering diploma-level courses that are not empowered to grant degrees (e.g., polytechnics, nursing institutes, and teacher training centers).
