Overview of the Department
• The Department of History at Sikkim Government College, Namchi was
established in 2002 under the affiliation of North Bengal University, and it has
since played a vital role in fostering academic inquiry.
• In 2005, the department introduced History as an honours subject, offering
students a deeper and more focused exploration of historical studies.
• The Department of History came under the direct ambit of Sikkim Central University
in 2009 following the College’s affiliation with Sikkim Central University in the
same year.
Founding Members
The founding faculty of the Department of History included distinguished
educators such as Dr. Kalyan Kumar Pradhan and Mr Bisnu Basnett who
were instrumental in shaping the department’s initial academic direction. In
addition to that, Mr Karma Samten Bhutia was the founding member of the
honours course in the year 2005.
