Namchi, 1 September 2026: The Department of English, in collaboration with the Literary Committee of Sikkim Government College, Namchi, organized a programme to commemorate Multilingual Day 2026, highlighting the importance of linguistic diversity and the preservation of indigenous and mother languages.

The programme commenced with an insightful address by Dr. Laxmi Rai, Convenor, Literary Committee, who spoke on the significance of Multilingual Day and the need to promote and preserve linguistic diversity. Dr. Yashoda Pradhan, Head of the Department of English, also graced the programme with her presence.

As part of the programme, students of the V and III Semesters delivered presentations focusing on Multilingual Day and its connection with Mundhum, a sacred and ancient oral tradition. The presentations highlighted the inherently multilingual nature of Mundhum and its potential role in promoting awareness and preservation of indigenous languages and cultural traditions.

An interactive quiz session was also organized, in which students were given short phrases and invited to identify the respective languages. The activity generated enthusiastic participation and added an engaging dimension to the programme.

The student speakers presented their ideas effectively, while the audience listened with keen interest. The programme provided an informative platform for students to understand the importance of multilingualism and the need to safeguard mother languages as an essential part of cultural heritage and identity.

The programme concluded on a positive note with a brief photography session. Overall, the celebration was engaging, informative and educational, successfully reinforcing the message that linguistic diversity is an invaluable part of society and must be preserved for future generations.
